The Art of Wet Felting: Making large and highly decorative wall hangings.
4 day Felting Masterclass, Riga, Latvia.
9 through 12 June 2011 and 15 through 18 June 2011
265EUR all inclusive; accomodation, full-board, etc.
Karoliina Arvilommi and Roderick Welch
The Artists:
Karoliina Arvilommi and Roderick Welch live and work in a tiny village on the Finnish border with Russia. Karoliina has been a full time textile artist and a felt maker for 20 years, but only recently has begun to teach classes about the techniques she has developed and been using during her professional life. Roderick Welch has a background in Arts, Crafts, and Three-dimensional Design. Meticulously mentored by Karoliina, he very quickly developed his own, distinctive style, adapting designs and imagery from other mediums into felt.
The Class:
Making highly decorative, large, strong felts, using carded wool fibre, from foundation to high quality finish. Concentrating on the control of colour, design and form, without any supplementary cutting, sewing, or needle felting.
It is about taking your own personal idea and designs, translating it into felt, and the importance of quality and control in the felting process.
Each participant must have prepared some ideas or designs before the workshop starts. This should include sketches and drawings, as well as inspirational materials, photographs etc.
The workshop is quite physical and very tiring; bring snacks and other things to make yourself comfortable….
…most importantly, bring an empty mind…
Equipment:
1. Wear old clothes and/or have some kind of waterproof apron.
(Working shoes… there will be a lot of soap and water on the floor.)
2. An old cotton or linen single bed sheet. (Larger than the work)
3. A Bamboo roller blind (or felting mat of some kind…)
4. 2 bowls, one small for soap, one larger for water.
5. a bucket.
6. a piece of plastic/nylon mosquito netting (80 x 80cm)
7. a piece of nylon/polyester “net-curtain” or Voile. Finer the better.
(Full size of piece to be worked if possible…80 x 80cm min.)
9. A pool “Noodle”.
If you are travelling a great distance, or have any problems sourcing equipment, please contact the organiser.
Materials:
The instructors will provide for purchase, their local, organic, self dyed and processed, pure Finnish Landrace wool. This is from a rare breed variety, Kainuu Grey, possibly one of the best felting wools in existence.
Participants are welcome to bring their own wool to use.
Please remember to bring with you, if you have any small amounts of:
leftover wool yarns (100% wool)
assorted prefelts, leftovers/offcuts from other projects
exotic fibres like camel, silk, cashmere etc.
