Felt Hardener

Hand turned from solid Finnish Birch, block laminated for stability with a natural, raw linseed oil finish. No peeling, flaking or crazing of the surface; can be re-oiled if necessary using the vegetable oil of your choice. Raw oils penetrate the surface of the wood leaving a wonderful satin finish rather than drying to a hard layer on the exterior of the wood.

felt roller

This model measures 80cm (31½") x 10cm (just under 4") in total.
The working surface is 60cm (23½") long and 30 cm (12") around. It weighs in at around 2.75kg (about 6lbs.)

Our roller/hardeners have a 20cm to 60cm working surface (plus 18cm for the handles) and are 10cm in diameter... They are hand-turned using solid Finnish Birch and the grooves are cut at random intervals, up to 1cm wide and 5mm to 8mm deep.

On the Lathe

felt roller

The reason for cutting the grooves like this is apparent when you use the roller. Narrow, regular grooves and ridges pass evenly and smoothly over the surface of the felt with little or no vibration. The felting action is in the vibrating action, (vibration equals feltation!!) the more movement you can produce, (within reason) the more effective the hardening process.
